Bridgers Coal Company was established in Wendell in 1922 by Alvin O. Bridgers. He provided the community a place to purchase coal for heating & delivered it all over the area.
In 1959 his son, Shelton Bridgers, who was a teacher & coach, came back to Wendell and added the farm supply business & founded Bridgers Coal & Farm Supply. He introduced fertilizer, seed, & chemicals to the business, as a convenient place for farmers to obtain supplies they needed. He and his wife, Rebecca Bridgers, ran the store full time for 30 years.
Shelton's son, Glenn Bridgers, returned to the business in 1993, after working with Farm Bureau Insurance, and added a crop insurance agency to the business. Glenn is currently teaching his son Ben Bridgers, a recent graduate of NC State University, how to run the business. Ben is currently providing custom application services.
The family business has provided Wendell and the surrounding area a place for coal, farm supplies, garden supplies, and home supplies for almost 100 years. They support local churches, fire department, police department, and civic organizations throughout the community including the Wendell Lions Club which are all active members. They're goal is to enhance the lives of people in the local community by providing a service that is not available from a family oriented business anywhere else in Wake County & they appreciate the patronage from local farmers and residents over nearly a century of service.
